Stronger ACCO's, Stronger Families
Stronger ACCOs, Stronger Families is a project designed to strengthen partnerships between Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) and non-Indigenous service providers in the child and family sector. Through meaningful collaboration, the initiative aims to create a culturally responsive and cohesive service system that empowers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families.
Since it's inception, the Wunan Foundation has consulted with ACCOs and non-Indigenous service providers across 11 locations in Australia, working to enhance locally led partnerships through the Communities for Children Facilitating Partner (CfC FP) and Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters (HIPPY) programs. This collaboration resulted in the development of a comprehensive suite of tools and resources to support non-Indigenous service providers in building more effective and impactful partnerships with ACCOs.

At its core, Stronger ACCOs, Stronger Families promoted greater community ownership in service delivery—a critical step in closing the gap in early childhood outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. By equipping ACCOs with the support, knowledge, and resources needed to lead service delivery, the project contributed to long-term positive change, fostering self-determination for future generations.
The success of the project has been driven by its adaptability, recognising the diverse strengths and challenges of different communities. In some locations, established ACCOs provided strong leadership, guiding service delivery. In other regions, smaller and emerging ACCOs played a vital role in connecting families with culturally responsive services. Non-Indigenous partners supported the initiative by fostering equitable collaborations, valuing ACCO knowledge and expertise, and ensuring culturally safe service delivery.

By placing Aboriginal leadership at the forefront, Stronger ACCOs, Stronger Families has helped build trust, strengthen services, and create opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families to thrive. The project stands as a model for genuine partnership, ensuring that community-led solutions drive lasting impact.
