Success Stories from Burraluba Yura Ngurra Hostel

29 January 2020

Burraluba Yura Ngurra Workers’ Hostel in Halls Creek is a program delivered by Wunan with the funding from The Department of Communities. Located 10km outside of the town of Halls Creek, the hostel provides its residents with a beautiful place to stay and a range of facilities to excel in their employment or training endeavours. The hostel provides accommodation for residents in the form of single and family units and offers a number of support services to improve the lives of its residents.

The hostel has been the home of Coreen Butters for the past 6 months. Coreen has been an employee of the Department of Child Protection (DCP) for many years and had relocated to Burraluba Workers’ Hostel with her three daughters.

Burraluba Hostel supports its residents by providing transportation to and from school for their children. When Coreen’s family first moved in to the hostel, the two younger daughters, Lai Lorna and Kiara were achieving low attendance rates on the first and second terms of this year. With the support provided by Burraluba, the two girls quickly regained interest in attending school and have achieved 100% school attendance in the fourth term.

‘We are all very proud of how far these two lovely girls came in such a short time’, said Craig Walker, the Co-ordinator at Burraluba Hostel. ‘We look forward to bringing you more good news about our residents and their families’.
