The Wunan Financial Hub received an award at the Financial Counselling Australia Western Australia (FCAWA) Conference Dinner held on October 22nd in Perth. Tanya Hill, our Financial Hub Program Manager, along with financial counsellor Tevita Naroba and financial capability worker Lawrence Hagan attended the event to represent Wunan Foundation at the conference. Simone McGucrk, Minister for Community Services, Children’s Interest and Women’s Interest presented the award which recognised the Big Super Day Out event held earlier this year in July. Wunan’s Financial Wellbeing team recently worked with a dedicated team of superannuation industry volunteers and the First Nations Foundation‘s Big Super Day out team to bring the first event of its kind to the East Kimberley. The First Nations Foundation is dedicated to achieving economic freedom for Aboriginal people across Australia. They have been hosting Big Super Day Out events since 2014, predominantly in the Eastern states. Wunan’s Financial Counsellor initially discussed the idea of hosting a Big Super Day Out in Kununurra when they were attending an ATSI Network function in 2017 at a Financial Counselling Australia (FCA) conference. Wunan’s Financial Counsellors were excited and initially hoped to host the event in Kununurra in 2018, however, the logistics and funds required pushed the timeline out to 2019. Wunan’s Financial Wellbeing Hub and Housing Services have started 2019 on a positive note, rolling out the new emergency relief and material aid program, aimed at assisting people in financial crisis who are in vulnerable situations and cannot pay their bills. Wunan support services are receiving a high number of clients through agency referrals. Wunan programs are building strong partnerships with Kununurra District High School and St Joseph’s Primary School to promote and encourage school attendance and embedding early learning through basic financial education into the schools which will benefit school children later in life. Wunan has established a good relationship with the community and people who access the support service to build their financial capability and resilience.
