Wunan’s Transitional Housing team spent three days in the town signing up the participants and  beginning to build relationships with them as part of Wunan’s provision of wrap-around support services. According to the team, there was a real buzz of excitement in Halls Creek on the day tenants moved in, with one moved to say “I am blessed” as she entered her new home. Transitional Housing Support Officer, Tracy Richards, said “It was brilliant to be there working with these fantastic people. I felt so proud to be a little part of their journey towards financial independence and home ownership.” The construction of the first fifteen Transitional Houses in Halls Creek was made possible through a partnership between the Kimberley Development Commission (KDC), the Halls Creek Housing group and the Department of Housing (DoH). Debbie Cain with DiplomasWith the support of Wunan Foundation, several members of staff began Double Diploma studies at Kimberley Training Institute a couple of years ago. Debbie Cain, Wunan’s Manager Housing Services, was recently the first of the group to graduate with Double Diplomas in Business and Management. Wunan_Transitional_Housing_Halls_CreekThe Minister for Housing, the Hon. Colin Holt MLC, visited Halls Creek recently to officially open Stage 1 of the Transitional Housing Program. The program is an innovative partnership developed to support Aboriginal people to move into home ownership. Community members, new tenants and staff from Wunan Foundation, the Department of Housing and Community Housing Limited came together to celebrate the opening of the eight homes in Wilkinson Street. Wunan Foundation sees housing as much more than just ‘bricks and mortar’ – because housing provides a powerful enabler for people to build independent, constructive and sustainable lives. Transitional Housing helps Aboriginal people support themselves by providing a clear and affordable pathway as they move from welfare to a working future. IMG_0723 (2)Stage 1 of the Transitional Housing Program supported by Wunan Foundation was officially opened the in Halls Creek on the 9th April, 2015 by Minister for Housing Hon. Colin Holt MLC. A joint venture between the W.A Department of Housing, Community Housing Limited, and the Aboriginal Community of Halls Creek has seen an outstanding effort in the establishment of Transitional Housing with seven 1-2 bedroom homes being built in Smiths Street, Halls Creek. The program is a designed to support Aboriginal people into home ownership and has resulted in significant positive outcomes in Kununurra in that a number of people are now moving towards home ownership in the Kununurra area.
