Wunan Supports NAIDOC Week

20 July 2012

The Wunan team marched for NAIDOC and had a stall at the White Gum Park Community Day where we shared beads and made different jewellery with the kids. Wunan also had much involvement at the NAIDOC Ball & Inaugural NAIDOC Cup match between Waringarri Crows and Kununurra Demons. Celeste from the Wunan team worked on the NAIDOC Ball Committee and helped pull together a fun filled night of entertainment, culture and celebration at the Ord River Sports Club. In particular Wunan designed and produced the posters and tickets for the event.

The NAIDOC Cup was much anticipated in the community and many were looking forward to the event, in particular the sport stars of the night, players from Crows and Demons. Pre-game entertainment was wonderful, with surprise musicians Stephen Pigram and Mark Atkins entertaining guests with laid back earthy tunes that set the tone for a beautifully cultural yet, modern celebration. The anticipation wasn’t in vain and the game was an action packed clash with great efforts from both teams. In the end the Crows came out victorious and Crows Captain, Lyndon Brandy received Man of the Match with 7 goals. After the football match the rocking and rolling began when popular Indigenous band Walkabout Boys getting the crowd enthused and dancing. The event was wonderful and many people are looking forward to next year’s event- Wunan are certainly keen to stay involved!
